About Me:

Hi – I’m into building bridges. After 15 years of being a scientist and spending my spare time immersed in philosophy and spirituality, it’s become clear that we still live in a world where these disciplines are kept painfully separate. Modernism and postmodernism have not only separated science, philosophy and spirituality, but also removed humanity from the picture. Modern science is based on a purely mechanical worldview; philosophy is highly abstract and intellectual; and spirituality is largely about transcendence – reaching for a God and a heaven that are somewhere else, but not here. So where is the human being in all of this? It seems the only way to create a humanity that is whole, and not divided, is by bridging these separate worldviews.

So that’s what I’m passionate about: creating wholeness. And I think creating wholeness is only possible if each and every one of us is a free and creative individual, while at the same time contributing to a collective that values freedom and creativity. I believe the key to this is Beauty – creating and perceiving Beauty is at the heart of our humanity, and Beauty has the potential to unify science, philosophy, and spirituality. This is not a transcendent Beauty – it’s a Beauty that is present here and now. And by always following this Beauty, which is real here and now, we remain true to our deepest humanity.

There is a very practical side to this, and so it’s no coincidence that one of my biggest heroes is architect Christopher Alexander, who’s passion is to “make a thing which manifests spirit, which shows us feeling, which makes God visible and shows us the ultimate meaning of existence, in the actual sticks and stones of the made thing.” (The Nature of Order, Vol. IV, pg. 303). Clearly, this is the most challenging thing one could possibly attempt, but also the most worthwhile.

And while part of this challenge is to create beauty in the things we make, an even greater challenge is to create beauty in ourselves, and in our relationships with each other. I believe this kind of beauty depends on Intersubjective Creativity, which I explore in my blog.
